I would describe it as “desire to create and improve” that I always had and that motivated me to study engineering. I have a (german) degree in mechanical engineering (Dipl.-Ing. (FH)), specialized in product development, so systematic problem solving and a range of different CAD programs are my basic tools of trade.
Another area of professional interest, that was part of studies, is energy in general, energy efficiency in particular. Courses on fuel cells, energy systems, renewable energies and HVAC gave me a broad insight. My Diplom thesis was about energy monitoring in a steel plant, and the measures derived from the gained informations.
Little jobs today are done without computers. Knowing how to use a computer for a particular job is one thing. Knowing which jobs a computer can be used for is another. Often the most repetitive and error prone jobs can be improved using the means information technology.
Acquiring knowledge can also be a waste of energy, if not shared with others. Websites are way of sharing this knowledge, not only on the internet but also within a corporation. I established corporate knowledge databases in two companies I worked for, and I know which are the benefits …and the obstacles.
Being a proud autodidact, I am very eager to learn about new fields, problems and methods and put them to practical use.
The thing I love the most about my job is providing people with the tools to master their everyday life in a faster, better and less stressful way.
